Dance levels explained

From absolute beginner to advanced — what each level means.

← All guides

  • Absolute beginner — simple steps, usually 16 or 32 counts, few or no turns. Perfect for your first few weeks.
  • Beginner — still friendly, with a few more steps like shuffles, rock steps and quarter turns.
  • Improver — you're confident with the basics. Expect half turns, syncopated "&" steps, and the odd tag or restart.
  • Intermediate — faster footwork, full turns, more styling, longer phrased dances.
  • Advanced — complex timing, multiple turns and fast changes. For experienced dancers.

Levels vary between choreographers and clubs, so treat them as a guide. If in doubt, ask the instructor.
